Shuters Learn is an AI-powered education platform built by Shuter & Shooter Publishers — South Africa's oldest educational publisher, trusted since 1925. It is designed for South African learners from Grade 1 to Grade 12, their teachers and their schools. The platform provides AI tutoring aligned to the CAPS curriculum, digital textbook rentals, a school learning management system (LMS), and real-time learning analytics for teachers and principals.
Is Shuters Learn free for learners? +
Yes — individual learners can sign up and use the AI tutor, quizzes, and class joining features completely free. Digital textbook rentals are available at affordable rates: 7-day rentals from 18% of the cover price, 30-day from 35%, and full-term from 55%. Schools can join a free pilot programme — contact us for details.
How does the AI tutor work? Is it safe for children? +
The AI tutor — named Kwazi (isiZulu for "to know") — is powered by Anthropic Claude, an AI system purpose-built for safe, educational use. It does not use Google Gemini or any platform with terms that prohibit under-18 users. Kwazi is guided by Shuters' CAPS curriculum content and answers learner questions across all subjects from Mathematics to Life Orientation. All responses are filtered for age-appropriateness. We are POPIA-compliant and learner data never leaves South African systems.
Which CAPS subjects does Shuters Learn cover? +
Shuters Learn covers all CAPS subjects across all four phases: Foundation Phase (Grade 1–3), Intermediate Phase (Grade 4–6), Senior Phase (Grade 7–9) and the FET band (Grade 10–12). This includes Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, English Home Language, Afrikaans, isiZulu and all other official languages, Geography, History, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Life Orientation, Technology, and more.
How do I set up Shuters Learn for my school? +
Setup takes under 10 minutes and requires no IT department. A school administrator registers the school and receives a unique school registration code. Teachers register with that code and create classes. Learners join classes using a QR code or join code — no email address required. The platform works on any smartphone, tablet or computer. How is Shuters Learn different from Siyavula or Vodacom e-School? +
Siyavula covers mainly Maths and Science for senior learners. Vodacom e-School offers static content with no AI personalisation. Shuters Learn covers all CAPS subjects from Grade 1 to Grade 12, including Foundation Phase (the most underserved phase in digital education).
