100% black-owned. BBBEE Level 1. Publishing in all 11 official South African languages. Building the nation through education — one book at a time.
One of the earliest business houses in Pietermaritzburg was Vause, Slatter and Co., established in 1850. This company was taken over in 1921 by Mr. L.G. Shuter. In 1925, Mr. R.A. Shooter joined and the name changed to Shuter & Shooter.
Mr. Shuter was the stationer and Mr. Shooter the bookseller and publisher. From these modest origins grew one of South Africa's most enduring and respected educational publishers — a company that has survived political upheaval, transformation and the digital revolution while staying true to its founding purpose: quality education for every South African child.
In 1981, Standard Bank presented the company with a plaque commemorating 102 years of continuous banking association with the business. Today, Shuters is proudly 100% black-owned and a BBBEE Level 1 contributor, carrying its founding mission into the digital age.
